Jannis grew up in a small German town, being exposed to music through his grandfather, a local musician, early on. He then learned the bassoon but switched to guitar in his teens. After studying jazz performance he switched to composition for his Masters degree at the Cologne high school of music and dance (HfMT), exploring past and present sounds and discovering his own approach to art. Depth, detail and grace, found in the music of J.S. Bach or Béla Bartók are of great interest to him, but the immediacy and energy of popular music like grunge also serve as a significant influence.
